It connects your ingredient inventory, recipe formulation, batch production records, and financial tracking in one place, so you can stop juggling spreadsheets and start making decisions with confidence.

Who is Maker Studio AI for?

It's built for soap makers, cosmetic formulators, candle makers, and any maker who creates products from recipes. Whether you're a hobbyist who wants to understand your formulas better, or a small business owner who needs to track costs and plan production, Maker Studio AI was designed with you in mind.

Do I need to know soap formulation to use it?

No. The app guides you through the process. You can enter your ingredients and the system calculates the lye, water, fatty acid profile, and quality scores automatically. If you're new to formulation, the AI Recipe Generator can even suggest a starting formula based on the type of bar you want to make.

Can I analyze recipes I found online?

Yes. You can enter any percentage-based recipe into the recipe builder and the system will calculate the full soap profile — hardness, cleansing, conditioning, bubbly and creamy lather scores, iodine value, and INS score — so you understand exactly what kind of bar that recipe will produce before you make it.

Does Maker Studio AI replace SoapCalc?

It does everything SoapCalc does and much more. Maker Studio AI includes a full lye calculator, fatty acid profile, quality score analysis, and printable recipe sheets — plus it connects your recipes to real ingredient costs, batch records, and business finances. There's also a free public Soap Recipe Calculator at /calculator that anyone can use without an account.

Can I import my existing recipes?

You can manually enter your existing recipes into the system — it only takes a few minutes per recipe. A CSV import tool is on our roadmap. Once your recipes are in, they're connected to your ingredient costs and batch history automatically.

What happens if I stop using the app?

Your data stays in your account. If you cancel your subscription, your account switches to the free tier — you keep read access to your existing recipes and batch records, you just can't add new ones beyond the free tier limits. We're also building a full data export feature so you can always take your data with you.

Can I export my recipes and batch records?

Each recipe has a printable recipe sheet you can save as a PDF. Batch records can be exported as MOCRA-compliant batch logs. A full CSV data export for all records is on our near-term roadmap.

How long does setup take?

Basic setup takes about 15–20 minutes. Start with Settings (your business profile and financial defaults), then add a few key ingredients, create your first recipe, and log a batch. After that, the system starts working for you automatically.

Can I try the soap calculator before creating an account?

Yes! Our free Soap Recipe Calculator is available at /calculator with no account required. It includes a full lye (NaOH) calculator, oil percentage builder, superfat adjustment, water discount calculations, and a printable recipe output.

How does the recipe analyzer work?

The recipe analyzer helps you understand what kind of bar your recipe will produce before you make it. Enter your oils and their percentages, and the system calculates the full soap profile — lye amount, water, fatty acid breakdown, and quality scores for hardness, cleansing, conditioning, and lather. It's like a preview of your finished bar.

What do hardness, conditioning, and cleansing numbers mean?

These are soap quality scores calculated from your recipe's fatty acid profile: • Hardness (29–54): How firm your bar will be. Higher = harder bar. • Cleansing (12–22): How well it removes oils and dirt. Too high can be drying. • Conditioning (44–69): How moisturizing it feels. Higher = more skin-loving. • Bubbly Lather (14–46): Big, fluffy bubbles — driven by lauric and myristic acids. • Creamy Lather (16–48): Rich, stable lather — driven by stearic and palmitic acids. • Iodine (41–70): Lower = harder, longer-lasting bar. Higher = softer, faster cure. • INS (136–165): Overall balance score. 160 is considered ideal.

Why did my soap turn out soft or brittle?

Soft soap usually means too many unsaturated oils (high oleic/linoleic), too much water, or insufficient cure time. Brittle soap often means too much coconut or palm kernel oil (high lauric acid), too little water, or lye-heavy formulation. The recipe analyzer shows your iodine value and fatty acid profile — these are the first things to check when troubleshooting texture.

Why does my recipe take so long to cure?

Cure time is driven by your fatty acid profile. High oleic oils (like olive, avocado, sunflower) produce soft bars that need 4–8 weeks to harden properly. High lauric oils (coconut, palm kernel) cure faster — often 4 weeks. The iodine value in your recipe score is a good indicator: lower iodine = faster cure.

Do I really need 10 different oils in a recipe?

No — and simpler recipes often perform better. Many beloved soap bars use just 2–4 oils. The AI Recipe Generator is built around this philosophy: it suggests balanced formulas using the fewest ingredients needed to hit your target qualities. Adding more oils doesn't automatically make a better bar; it just adds complexity and cost.

What ingredients actually change the qualities of soap?

The oils and butters are what drive soap quality. Coconut oil adds cleansing and bubbly lather. Olive oil adds conditioning. Shea butter adds creaminess. Castor oil boosts lather. Palm or lard adds hardness. The fatty acid profile section in each recipe shows exactly how each ingredient is contributing to your final bar.

Can I substitute ingredients in a recipe?

Yes — the AI Ingredient Swap tool is built for this. Open any recipe, click the swap icon next to any ingredient, and the AI will suggest 2–3 substitutes with explanations of how each swap will change your bar's qualities, what to expect in texture and lather, and any formulation cautions to be aware of.

What happens if I change my water discount?

A higher water discount (lower water ratio) means your soap will be firmer at unmold, cure faster, and have a slightly harder final bar. It can also make the batter move faster in the pot. The system recalculates your lye and water amounts automatically whenever you adjust the water discount or superfat.

Can I save and reuse recipes?

Yes. Every recipe you create is saved to your library. You can open any saved recipe, scale it to any batch size, and export a printable recipe sheet with the full ingredient weights, lye calculation, quality scores, and fatty acid profile.

What is a batch record?

A batch record remembers exactly how you made a product so you can recreate your best batches anytime — and prove compliance if you ever need to. It captures the recipe used, exact ingredient weights, production date, batch number, yield, and any notes you add. It's your production memory.

How does inventory tracking work?

When you log a purchase (Expenditure), the system adds those ingredients to your inventory and calculates their true cost per ounce including shipping and taxes. When you log a batch, the system automatically deducts the ingredients used. You always know what's on your shelf and what it cost you.

Can I track curing time?

Yes. Each batch record includes a cure countdown that starts from your production date. You can set your target cure time per recipe, and the dashboard shows which batches are still curing and which are ready to sell.

Can I see which recipes created which batches?

Yes. Every batch is linked to the recipe it was made from. From a recipe's detail view you can see its full batch history — every time you've made it, the yield, the cost, and any notes. From a batch record you can jump directly to the recipe.

How does the system calculate my product cost (COGS)?

The system calculates your true Cost of Goods Sold automatically. It takes the weighted average cost of each ingredient (including shipping and taxes from your expenditures), uses your recipe percentages to find the exact amount used per batch, adds your labor rate, and gives you a precise cost per bar or per unit. You focus on making; the app handles the math.

What's the difference between an Expenditure and an Inventory item?

An Expenditure is the act of buying something — like logging a supplier invoice. Inventory is the actual stock on your shelf. When you log an expenditure for ingredients, the system automatically adds those items to your inventory at their true landed cost.

What is the show planner?

The show planner helps you prepare for craft fairs and markets. You can set a target revenue goal, select which products you plan to bring, and the system calculates how many units of each you need to hit your goal. It also generates a production checklist so you know exactly what to make before the show.

How do I plan inventory for a market?

Create a show in the Show Planner, add your products and target quantities, and the system checks your current inventory to tell you what you already have and what you still need to make. It accounts for curing time so you know the production deadline.

Can I track wholesale orders?

Yes. You can log wholesale orders as sales with a wholesale price tier. The system tracks the order, deducts the inventory, and records the revenue separately from retail sales so you can see the profitability of each channel.

Can I record online sales?

Yes. You can log sales from any channel — Etsy, Shopify, your own website, in-person markets, or wholesale. Direct integrations with Shopify and Etsy are on our roadmap; for now you can log daily or weekly totals from any platform.

Can Maker Studio AI tell me if a product is profitable?

Yes — this is one of the most powerful features. The system calculates your true COGS per product (ingredient cost + labor + overhead allocation), compares it to your selling price, and shows your gross margin percentage. You can see at a glance which products are your best earners and which ones are costing you money.

How does the marketing companion know what to promote?

The Marketing Companion is connected to your recipe library and product data. When you ask it to create content, it uses your actual product names, ingredients, and benefits — not generic soap descriptions. The result is content that sounds like you wrote it, not a template.

Can it create captions and newsletters automatically?

Yes. The Marketing Hub can generate Instagram captions, product descriptions, email newsletter content, and blog post ideas based on your products and seasonal themes. You review and edit before publishing — the AI does the first draft.

Can I schedule marketing from inside the app?

The Marketing Hub includes a content calendar where you can plan and organize your posts. Direct social media scheduling (posting directly to Instagram, Facebook, etc.) is on our roadmap.

What kind of business insights will I get from the Daily AI Brief?

The AI Brief is a quick, scannable summary at the top of your dashboard. It highlights revenue trends, top-selling products, low-stock alerts, upcoming show prep reminders, and any other actions that need your attention that day.

How does the finance section calculate costs?

The finance section tracks every dollar in and out of your business. On the cost side, it captures ingredient purchases, packaging, shipping supplies, and overhead. On the revenue side, it records every sale. The system then calculates your gross profit, net profit, and cash flow so you always know where your business stands.

Can I track ingredient and packaging expenses?

Yes. The Expenditures section is designed for exactly this. Log any supplier purchase and the system extracts the line items, calculates the landed cost per unit (including shipping and taxes), and adds everything to your inventory automatically.

Can the AI really help me price my products correctly?

Yes. The pricing optimizer uses your true COGS (ingredient cost + labor + overhead) and your target profit margin to calculate the minimum retail and wholesale prices you need to charge to be profitable. It removes the guesswork from pricing.

How does Maker Studio AI help with MoCRA compliance?

The app is built with MoCRA in mind. It maintains detailed batch records with ingredient lists (including percentages), production dates, batch numbers, supplier information, and yield data — all key requirements for cosmetic product facility registration and adverse event reporting. The MOCRA Batch Log PDF export is formatted to include all required fields.

What's the difference between Profit and Cash Flow?

Profit is what's left after you subtract costs from revenue — it's an accounting measure. Cash flow is the actual money moving in and out of your bank account. You can be profitable on paper but have negative cash flow if you've spent a lot on inventory that hasn't sold yet. The app tracks both so you get a complete picture of your business's health.

Is there a free plan?

Yes. Every new account starts with a 14-day free trial with full access to all features — no credit card required. After the trial, you can choose a paid plan or continue with the free tier, which allows up to 3 recipes and 1 batch record. There's also a free public Soap Recipe Calculator at /calculator that anyone can use without an account.

What are the paid subscription plans?

We offer three paid plans: • Maker Starter ($19/month) — for hobbyists and early-stage makers. • Maker Studio ($39/month) — our recommended plan for active soap businesses. Adds unlimited recipes, full inventory management, batch costing, pricing optimizer, supplier tracking, production planning, marketing planner, and the AI formulation assistant. • Maker Studio Pro ($79/month) — for scaling soap brands. Everything in Maker Studio plus advanced forecasting, AI yield optimizer, compliance tools, recipe vault access, and training library access.

What happens when my free trial ends?

Can I upgrade or cancel at any time?

Yes. You have complete control over your subscription. Upgrade, downgrade, or cancel at any time from your account settings — no hidden fees, no long-term contracts.

Is my recipe and cost data secure?

Absolutely. Your data is your own. We use industry-standard security practices including data encryption in transit and at rest. Your proprietary formulas and business data are private and only accessible to you.

Does Maker Studio AI share or sell my data?

Never. We do not and will not ever sell your data to third parties. Your business information is confidential and is only used to power the features within your own account.
